Episode 101 – Pilot
Simon Stiles, one of our show-within-the-show performers, warms up the live studio audience at Studio 60 as the camera pans through the studio itself. Throughout the monologue, Tommy Schlamme takes us down a set of stairs (inscribed, “BE FUNNY TONIGHT!!”), around a corner, and past a series of sets. It’s an ant farm of pre-show activity. Simon schools the crowd (and the audience at home) on how Studio 60 operates: they start with the cold open and cut to the title sequence in VTR (video tape recording), featuring their own version of Don Pardo, Herb Sheldon. He’s got a smooth voice, but he’s no Don Pardo. We learn that the show’s motto is not “Live, from New York,” but “It’s party night in Hollywood,” that Felicity Huffman is hosting, and Three 6 Mafia is the musical guest.
